I have played baritone ukulele since the age of 9. In addition to teaching middle school music for 35 years, I’ve played trumpet professionally throughout my career.  Another favorite instrumental sound for me is the bass guitar. I played bass in several bands and theater productions throughout my career.

When I retired, I wanted to get back to singing and songwriting. I picked up my baritone ukulele once again and found instant gratification.  Some of my original songs are included in our Kinship Trio performances.

In addition to the thrill of playing music, my life has been enriched by the time I spend with my wife, Lynn, and my sister, Rhonda, as we move forward in this endeavor we call the Kinship Trio.

I am excited to be playing upright electric bass in the Kinship Trio!  While Craig and Rhonda take care of the musical arrangements, I have an excellent ear for adding practical and creative nuances that can be found in the trio’s music.  I love the challenge and the resulting sound as my bass adds the final rounding touch to the music of the Kinship Trio.

When I was 9, I received a plastic “Elvis” guitar for Christmas and to my parents’ dismay it didn’t interest me. Instead, they learned to play it. Fun family sing-alongs soon followed and by age 14, I was playing the guitar after all! I immersed myself in the folk and bluegrass scenes, performing solo and with several groups and started to write and sing my own songs. Over the years, I dabbled in any other stringed instrument I could get my hands on including the dulcimer, autoharp, banjo, mandolin, bass guitar and hammered dulcimer. Then I picked up my mother’s violin and I’ve never looked back. I had “found” my instrument. Since then, I’ve played the fiddle with a local fiddlers’ group, a folk-rock quartet, and now with the Kinship Trio. Singing and playing with my brother and sister-in-law is a special joy – life truly has come full circle.
